Transitioning Beauty of the Week

Triticia Daniels

Queens, N.Y.

How long have you been transitioning and what made you decide to do so?
I've been transitioning for 19 months. Initially I started the whole process because my hair was damaged and had become very thin from the constant relaxing and wear and tear associated with wearing weaves. I didn't want to do the big chop so I salvaged my hair, cutting it 6-8 weeks or so until all my relaxed hair was gone. I didn't know how take of my natural hair which why I chose to perm it. With the products being made today and more women opting to go natural it has made me more confident in making this transition.

If your hair had its own personality, how would you describe it?

In the beginning of my transition, I used to wash my hair every 3 days as directed by a hair stylists. After a few months and my hair began drying out I quickly realized that I couldn't follow this regimen any more. Now I wash my hair once a week with head and shoulders and always make certain to use a good conditioner... usually I either do a natural protein treatment(once a month) or a hot oil deep conditioner and I use coconut milk serum to dress my hair and castor oil for my scalp if it's dry.

What is your hair regimen and what are your hair care essentials?

The best part during this journey has been me being able to honor my body and stop using chemicals that do long term damage. Seeing someone else make the decision, admire that, and now being able to be confident in who I am, how I look and inspire other has been the best part. The hardest part was coming to grips that my curls are here to stay. I tend to sweat alot! Going natural, me sweating would always ruin the time and effort I would spend flat ironing it. So after a few weeks I gave up and gave in, I love my curls!

What has been the best and hardest part of your natural hair journey?
I don't have a particular person who I admire. I am very thankful though to all the women who post how-to videos of styles, tips and what has worked for them. It definitely made a huge difference in me becoming creative with my hair and learning how to continue on this great journey!
