Transitioning Beauty of the Week: Nikia Maitbia

How long have you been transitioning and what made you decide to do so?
I began my transition in February 2011, gradually cutting the relaxed ends of my hair. Fed up with the maintenance of two hair types, I finally had the remaining straight ends cut off in November 2011. My decision to go natural was my last step in leading a healthier lifestyle. I was already taking the natural approach when it came to caring for my body as well as maintaining my household, often creating my own concoctions to save money

If your hair had its own personality, how would you describe it?
My hair would be called a wild child that requires tlc and special attention in order to behave properly in public. It definitely likes to fuss and complain when ignored and will let me know when it's unhappy!!

What is your hair regimen and what are your hair care essentials?
I wash my hair once a week. I deep condition before every wash. I rotate my dc products so that my hair never gets bored. I like to use clay masks (Indian Healing clay, Kokoman clay), Lush Henna, or a homemade dc and oil treatments. I use shampoo twice a month, which is done after my dc. I apply a leave in condtioner, finger detangle, and then twist my hair or bun it for stretching overnight. I usually wear my hair out so re-twisting every few nights is a must to avoid fairy knots and breakage. I sleep on a satin pillowcase and also use a slip to cover my hair nightly.

What has been the best and hardest part of your natural hair journey?
The best part about this journey is being able to ignore my hair when I sweat, workout, shower, swim, and get caught in the rain without an umbrella. But I truly love seeing my daughter smile at the similarities of our natural hair. The most challenging part of the journey is being forced to be a trendsetter at my job and within my family.

Who is your hair icon, and why?
Even though she doesn't want to be recognized for her hair, I simply love Solange Knowles' overall style. I'd pretty much rock any messy hair do and effortlessly thrown together outfit I've seen her in. She's stunning!!
