Transitioning Beauty of the Week: Mary Hall
How long have you been transitioning and what made you decide to do so?
I have been natural for 18 months. I decided to transition because I wanted to experience my natural hair. Since the age of 12, I have relaxed and straightened my hair. I was intrigued after watching many YouTubers and researching natural hair. One day, I woke up and said, I want to be "me". I was blessed with a unique head of hair and I no longer wanted to hide it.
If your hair had its own personality, how would you describe it?
I would describe my hair's personality as wild. My hair has an attitude and makes the rules. I can't control the curl pattern and there are days I can' control the final look of my hairstyle. Yet, I love being natural. I love experiencing my wild hair every day.
What is your hair regime and what are you hair care essentials?
My hair regimen is very simple. It consists of weekly washing (co-washing or shampooing) and deep conditioning my hair every week. A Flat twist-out has been my essential style. I use minimum products on my hair and my hair can't live without coconut oil.
What has been the best part and hardest part of your hair journey?
The best part of my natural hair journey is experiencing my multi-textured hair. I didn't know how many women were interested in being natural. Every day, I have conversations with complete strangers regarding my hair. One of the hardest parts of my natural hair journey was not starting my journey sooner. I wish I would have started my natural hair journey years ago. The other hard part of being natural is detangling. I haven't become an expert of detangling my kinky curls.
Who is your hair icon and why?
My hair icon is any woman who has natural hair. I love seeing women rock an afro, twist, or braids. There's something about a woman wearing her natural hair that gives her a uniqueness that can't be duplicated. Every natural hair woman is my icon.
