Marquita: Turning Mistakes Into Milestones

By Marquita Robinson

Looking good while transitioning to natural is a constant battle. It takes patience, it takes time, and it takes a lot of forethought. Remember when you were relaxed and all you had to do was unwrap and shake? Yea, those days are so incredibly over for you. Sorry.

I had a few embarrassing moments while transitioning. The most frequent being overlooking a twist or a knot before leaving the house. It’s always a little embarrassing when someone says “Hey, you missed one.”

But, the worst was when I completely fell asleep while Bantu knotting my hair. I started doing my hair a little too late and had already committed a little over half of my hair to knots, so I needed to finish. At one point my arms were so tired that I had to give them a rest, I put my arms down, took a deep breath and next thing I knew my alarm was going off and the back half of my hair was in bantu knots and the other half was a frizzy ridiculous mess.
I gathered the front of my hair, twisted it, pushed it up into a bump and clipped it. I let the back of my hair out. Guys, I turned a disaster into a new hairstyle.

I learned a few things from that:

One, creativity will fix most disasters. Two, if you’re exhausted, go with a simpler twist out. Two, if you’re truly tired of tedious styling, then maybe it’s time to switch to a new transitioning option like protective styling or a big chop.
Whatever you decide to do, don’t let an embarrassing moment deter you from your goal of becoming natural! Keep it moving!
