Essential Natural Hair Anthems

by Sharlyn Pierre, sharlynpierre.wordpress.com

It’s no coincidence that the process is called “transitioning.” The changes just aren’t cosmetic; they’re reflective as well.  You can still serve it up something fierce, and here are a few tunes that feel the same way.

The Beauty Within Dead Prez

There’s nothing more attractive than a man who is appreciative of his lady and doesn’t mind expressing his admiration. Lucky for us, in our first selection, there’s 2 men! The hip-hop duo borrowed the beats from BoB’s “Nothing on You” as they shout out the women that “don’t even really wear lipstick, but your beauty is a natural mystic.”

Brown Skin Lady Black Star

Okay, so we have one more dynamic duo, but we couldn’t help but throw this melodic track into the mix. Talib and Mos Def spit their game as they kick it up a notch and step correct. We usually keep the pace when passersby try to gain our attention, but we wouldn’t mind slowing down to hear these two out.

India.Arie featuring Akon I Am Not My Hair

Powerful and poignant India.Aire and Akon embodied what a lot of us felt and still feel about what we go through with our hair. They chopped this song up with diamond cutlery. The mane message is simple: I am not your expectations.

Willow Smith Whip My Hair

I don’t know how many of us in our tween years would have been this confident about our press-and-curls. As much fun as this song is, it had us whipping it real hard.

Common Come Close

Although this song is a decade old, the message still rings true today. Common lays it down quite flat when he says, “your whole being is beautiful.” We feel as if he’s speaking to us. It really is just a fly love song.

Donnie Cloud 9

Going natural is a personal decision. It says a lot about who we are. So just remember, in the words of Donnie “We live from the head down and not the feet up.”
